MFI or Melt Flow Index defines the ease of flow of thermoplastic polymer melt
This index is one of the important indicators in determining the quality of thermoplastic polymers
MFI or Melt Flow Index of thermoplastic polymer is done in a device called extrusion plastometer
MFI is the amount of mass of thermoplastic polymer that comes out of a hole with a specific capillary diameter called a Die in a period of ten minutes at a certain and constant pressure and temperature
The conditions for measuring the Melt Flow Index are the same for each category of polymers, for example, for polyethylene, this test is perform at a temperature of 190 degrees Celsius and the weight used on the piston is 5 kg
By using this index, the flow behavior and molecular weight of thermoplastic materials are measured, and relying on this index, the quality of thermoplastics can be measured for specific applications
The higher the melt flow index indicates the higher the fluidity of the thermoplastic
As the molecular mass of thermoplastic polymer increases, the melt flow index decreases. By reducing the melt flow index, the tensile strength, tear resistance, softening temperature and toughness of the polymer increases
